SPANISH FRETTED SMALL-CUP TIZONA. 16th Century. Handcrafted in carbon steel with an antiqued finish, made by master swordsmith of Toledo, .
This sword reached its apogee in the so-called Spanish Golden Age, during the 16th and 17th centuries. This elegant sword was an essential accessory to the most expensive, sumptuous and elegant clothing of knights. It is the precursor to the modern-day foil used in fencing, and its emergence revolutionised the way fighting was done up to that time, leading intelligence, speed and art to prevail over brute force.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, this type of sword reached its apogee, spreading from Spain throughout Europe and becoming a staple in the attire of any knight, with an array of designs on their elaborate hilts.
Beauty aside, these are truly lethal weapons, suitable for real combat in duels.

The ricasso is engraved on both sides: on the front it is inscribed with the words “En Toledo”, to indicate that it was made in this city, and bears the master’s touchmark, “AA”. Below the fuller, the blade features four bevels, two on each side, down to the point.
